Recollections of the past [manuscript] 1910.

Ford briefly describes his childhood in England; voyages to New York and Richmond, Va.; jewelry business in Richmond; farming scam at Buffalo Gap; apprenticeship with Hudson & Lushbaugh, Staunton contractors, who built the Rotunda annex; employment by Charlottesville builder Peter Wade; early married life in Union and Lewisburg, Va.; return to Charlottesville where his brother Charles superintended the macadamizing of Main Street; tent making for the Confederacy; death of his first wife from tuberculosis; property clerk at the Confederate States Arsenal in Richmond and member of the Local Reserve Force called out for Dahlgren's raid; retreat to Milton, N.C.; and return to Charlottesville and employment by the University of Virginia and Anderson Brothers Book Store following his dismissal from the University by W. H. Echols. Ford enumerates but does not describe the various construction work he did for the University of Virginia over the course of 30 years . Ford briefly notes that Hudson's slave taught him the carpenter's trade.
